Natasha Hadiza Akpoti-Uduaghan is a Nigerian lawyer, social entrepreneur, and formidable politician who has etched her name in history as the first female Senator to emerge from Kogi State. Representing the Kogi Central Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly, she is widely celebrated as a fearless advocate for her people, a champion of industrial revival, and a proud daughter of Ebiraland.

Here is the detailed biography of a woman whose resilience continues to inspire thousands across the nation and beyond.

Early Life, Parentage, and Ebira Heritage

Natasha Hadiza Akpoti was born on Sunday, December 9, 1979, at the Maternity Hospital in Ilorin, Kwara State (now the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital). She is the second of four children and the only daughter born into a unique blend of Ebira and Ukrainian heritage.

Her father, Dr. Jimoh Abdul Akpoti, was a renowned Nigerian physician and politician from Obeiba-Ihima in the Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State. Her mother, Ludmila Kravchenko, hails from Rakitna in the Chernivtsi region of Ukraine. The couple met in the Soviet Union while Dr. Akpoti was studying on a scholarship at the Bogomolets National Medical University.

Natasha spent her formative years deeply rooted in Ebiraland, growing up across Ihima, Okene, Adavi, and Ajaokuta. Her worldview was profoundly shaped by her late father, a man celebrated for his exceptional philanthropy. Dr. Akpoti was known to treat the poor for free, pay tuition for thousands of local children, and support indigenous farmers. His dedication to humanity instilled in Natasha a lifelong commitment to empathy and social justice before his passing on November 3, 1998.

Education and Academic Excellence

A brilliant mind from a young age, Natasha’s educational journey reflects her drive for excellence:

  • Primary Education: She attended Christ the King Nursery and Primary School in Okene, where she served as the Social Prefect.
  • Secondary Education: After briefly attending Government Girls Unity Secondary School in Oboroke, she proceeded to Federal Government College, Idoani in Ondo State, graduating in 1997 as the Head Girl.
  • First Degree (Law): She gained admission to the University of Abuja in 1998 to study Law, earning her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 2004.
  • Nigerian Law School: Following her graduation, she attended the Nigerian Law School in Bwari, Abuja, and was called to the Nigerian Bar on November 8, 2005.
  • Postgraduate Studies: Expanding her expertise into the energy sector, Natasha proceeded to the University of Dundee in Scotland, UK. She earned a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in 2011 and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Oil and Gas Management in 2012, graduating with high merit.

She has also acquired executive certifications from prestigious global institutions, including the INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship program in Singapore.

Professional Career and the Ajaokuta Steel Advocacy

Before stepping into the turbulent waters of Nigerian politics, Senator Natasha built a robust corporate and entrepreneurial career.

  • Corporate Law: From 2007 to 2010, she worked as legal counsel at Brass LNG, an international gas liquefaction company, where she honed her knowledge of the upstream petroleum sector.
  • Social Entrepreneurship: In 2015, driven by her father's philanthropic legacy, she founded the Builders Hub Impact Investment Program (BHIIP) to tackle grassroots economic challenges and empower local communities.

The Fight for Ajaokuta: Natasha gained national prominence as a fearless crusader for the industrialization of Ebiraland. On March 1, 2018, she presented a heavily researched investigative report to the National Assembly exposing the corruption and institutional bottlenecks stalling the Ajaokuta Steel Mill. Despite facing intense opposition and pushback from high-ranking government ministries, she stood her ground. She eventually won a landmark libel lawsuit against detractors who attempted to smear her advocacy, firmly establishing herself as a fearless voice for the voiceless.

Political Journey: Making History in Kogi Central

Transitioning from activism to governance, Natasha entered the political arena to drive systemic change. She contested in the 2019 Kogi State gubernatorial election under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), running a fiercely spirited campaign that endeared her to the grassroots.

The 2023 Senatorial Victory: In 2023, she ran for the Kogi Central Senatorial seat under the People's Democratic Party (PDP). Though the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) initially declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abubakar Sadiku Ohere, as the winner, Natasha refused to back down.

Armed with evidence, she challenged the results at the Election Petitions Tribunal. The Tribunal ruled in her favor, a decision that was later unanimously upheld by the Court of Appeal in Abuja. On November 2, 2023, history was made as she was officially sworn in by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, becoming the first female Senator to represent Kogi State.

Personal Life

Beyond her legislative and professional achievements, Senator Natasha is a devoted mother and wife. She married young and had her first son, Daniel, shortly after entering the university. Today, she is happily married to High Chief Emmanuel Uduaghan, the Alema of Warri Kingdom, elegantly blending her Ebira heritage with the rich culture of the Niger Delta.

Whether fighting for gender equality, industrial reforms, or the economic empowerment of her constituents, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan continues to be a beacon of hope and a proud ambassador of Ebiraland.
